Last month on 6th September, it was me and Chris’
second wedding anniversary. To say the time has flown by would be an
understatement. We’ve been living pretty hectic lives ever since we’ve known
each other let alone been married and are always go go go, so we decided to
have some time out and disappear for our anniversary.
The planning was all a bit last minute, trawling through
lastminute.com and Trip Advisor and initially we weren’t even sure where we
wanted to go in the country! We soon settled for Suffolk, being not too far
away to travel but far enough to be somewhere different for a change. That’s
when we came across the Bull Inn at Barton Mills. Located near Mildenhall, the
Bull Inn really caught our eye with its quirky boutique bedroom décor. We soon discovered that as well as the house
rooms there were six “feature rooms”
which were even more unique, all with a running theme of cows! Known as Daisy, Flying Cow, Gold, Lazy Cow, Princess
and Zebra, the feature rooms all had something exciting and unique to
offer. Chris and I decided on the Zebra room as it ticked lots of boxes for us,
the first being a huge comfy 6ft bed. I fell in love with the double ended
slipper bath (what girl wouldn’t?).
On the morning of our anniversary we were both rather giddy
with excitement and I presented Chris with a little anniversary gift. I’m a bit
of an old fashioned girl at heart and like to try theme each year’s gift with
the traditional wedding gifts, the second year of marriage being cotton.
Keeping that in mind I opted for a t-shirt for Chris, with of course a bicycle
on as he’s mad on cycling (blog coming soon!) For last year’s anniversary
(which you can read all about here if you like) the tradition was paper so I’d
made him an origami heart card.
Anyway getting back to the awesome hotel, we checked in at
around 2 o’clock and decided to sit in the pretty courtyard and relax in the
sunshine before adjourning to the room. The staff at the Bull Inn were so friendly
and instantly made us feel welcome.
Onto the all-important room… I can honestly say this is the coolest hotel room I have ever stayed in! The décor was exactly what we expected from the website, with long crushed velvet curtains, a huge comfy bed and that all important free standing bath. There was even an iPhone docking station which was perfect to play relaxing music whilst enjoying a bubble bath. And that bath! It was so amazingly large and comfortable I didn’t want to get out. Even Chris, a shower lover through and through enjoyed a dip and has since vowed we will one day have our own free standing bath. I really liked that the bath products were locally sourced too which is a theme that carried on into the restaurant.
We decided to eat in the restaurant that evening as the food
sounded so good on the website and when we’d arrived we could smell some
seriously good grub. Needless to say we were not disappointed! Whilst I’d been
getting ready, Chris has snuck down to the bar for a cheeky drink and got
chatting to the friendly staff who after finding out it was our anniversary
went to the extra effort of making our table special. It was so thoughtful and
lovely, we really appreciated it!
The funky décor extended from the bedrooms to the dining room
with touches like this amazing cow print wallpaper which I really really want! The food was sensational, opting firstly for a
side of freshly baked bread and olives whilst we waited for our starters of the
brie fritters and bull cocktail. The main event was the steak and can I just
say this was one of THE BEST steaks I have ever eaten! I wanted to cry it was
that delicious! We also celebrated with a bottle of champagne and enjoyed the
restaurant to ourselves- the perk of a Sunday night stay.
The next morning after an amazing sleep we headed down to
breakfast and went for the “Suffolk
breakfast” with locally sourced produce once again. It tasted fantastic and
set us up the day. Even the décor of the bar/breakfast area was cool and gave
us plenty to look at whilst we chowed down. I was sad to leave the Bull Inn
that morning, Chris and I trying to justify staying another night but sadly we
had to get home.
I can’t rate the Bull Inn highly enough. It was the perfect place to celebrate our
anniversary with its friendly staff and awesome feature room. I’d highly
recommend coming here if you’re looking for somewhere a bit different to stay
overnight and love your food- particularly steak! I can definitely see Chris
and I heading back in the near future, maybe my birthday? And I’m sure we’ll
try out one of the other amazing feature rooms! To say our anniversary was brilliant
is an understatement and thinking back to it now gives me a warm feeling. I’m
such a soppy soul!
Have you been to the Bull Inn?
I love this place as I did a review of it years back for LS. Congrats on your anniversary (all the coolest people marry in September!)
